Basket Weaving Is Having a Moment Thanks to College Football Coaches

Join the #BasketWeavingCoachesChallenge

Basket weaving is having a national moment, and we are here for it!

In a recent USA Today story about SEC offseason jabs, University of Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian said, "all you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree." Not long after, Florida head coach Jon Sumrall jumped in on X with: "Grateful to coach at a top 10 public university that also offers advanced basket weaving!"

We laughed, because if you have ever tried basket weaving, you know the truth:

Basket weaving is not as simple as it may seem.

It is relaxing, creative, and beginner-friendly with the right support, but it is also a real skill. The first time you try it, you will probably learn quickly that "basket weaving" is not a punchline. It is truly a work of art!

So we thought, why not turn this national attention into something fun and positive?

Basket weaving is the talk of the sports world

Why we love this moment (and why basket weaving belongs in education)

This moment also lines up with something we care about deeply: the many benefits of weaving and having a creative outlet.

Basket weaving has real educational value at every level, including higher education. In fact, while comments from the University of Texas football coach are making recent headlines, University of Texas at Austin art education associate professor Dr. Chris Bain wrote about basket weaving in the scholarly Art Education journal, published by the National Art Education Association (NAEA). In the article, Dr. Bain shares how she made her first basket with Danielle Anderson (Dani Sue Creations and owner of Basket Maker’s Supply), alongside other UT staff who participated in a basket weaving class as ongoing education. She goes on to outline the many meaningful benefits of basket weaving, both personally and within art education.

We love that story because it shows what makers already know: weaving is practical, creative, therapeutic, beautiful, and connects people from all over the world. It is an art form that teaches you to problem-solve, improvise, and finish what you started.

So if the national sports world is going to talk about basket weaving, we're happy to help everyone experience the joy of it!

Introducing the #BasketWeavingCoachesChallenge ...

Here's the deal:

  • Coach Sarkisian: we'll send you one of our beginner basket kits if you'll post your first attempt!
  • Coach Sumrall: we've got "advanced basket weaving" materials ready whenever you are & will even send you one of our advanced baskets for you to post a pic with!

No trash talk needed. No pressure to be perfect. Just honest first tries, and hopefully some fun along the way.

If either coach takes us up on it, we'll cheer them on, because every weaver remembers their first basket. The uneven tension, the wobbly base, the moment you realize you have to slow down and trust the process. It is part of the fun.

Calling all weavers: Join the #BasketWeavingCoachesChallenge

This is not just for coaches. We want makers, beginners, and long-time weavers to join in too!

Post a photo or short video of either:

  • your first basket ever, or
  • your current basket, and tell us if it is beginner or advanced

Use this hashtag: #BasketWeavingCoachesChallenge and tell us what you think about basket weaving!

Tag us @BasketMakersSupply so we can share your post and cheer you on!

Want to learn basket weaving?

If you have been curious about basket weaving but have never tried it, a beginner kit is the easiest way to start. We recommend The Snack Basket Kit as you do not need special tools or years of experience, just the willingness to try.

And if you're already weaving and ready for "advanced basket weaving," we have supplies, materials, and patterns to keep you learning.

One national sports quote turned into a fun reminder that basket weaving is real art, one that not only has real educational value but is a real joy for people worldwide!

Beginner or advanced, who's weaving with us?
