Basket Making Traditions in South Central Kentucky

Basket Making Traditions in South Central Kentucky

This presentation at the Green County Public Library, Greensburg, Kentucky was held on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015.

Beth Hester, folklorist and basket maker with The Basket Maker’s Catalog in Allen County, explored the story of Kentucky’s Basket Making Traditions.

The participants enjoyed looking at a collection of baskets made in south central Kentucky since the early 1980s, as well as baskets by other Kentuckians and artists across the U.S.  They listened to the interesting history of this most important craft tradition, and viewed the film, A Measure of the Earth, highlighting several contemporary American basket makers whose work was included in an exhibit in 2013 at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Sponsored by the Kentucky Folklife Program with funding provided by an NEA ArtWorks Grant.
