Description

This is a 2-day class (February 28 - March 1, 2026 from 9am to 4pm EST both days)

We are thrilled to announce that Judy Zugish from Marysville, Washington, will be joining us to share her wealth of knowledge during a weekend focused on small basket weaving. Over the course of the event, Judy will introduce a variety of techniques for starting, weaving, and finishing baskets with soft garden fibers. You’ll receive hands-on instruction, along with samples and skills to help inspire further experimentation on your own.

Techniques Covered:

Judy will teach specific techniques including working with cedar and willow bark, scirpus and garden fibers, iris, and day lily. She will introduce twill, twine, and chase combinations with soft fibers, guiding you through two small projects that each begin, weave, and end with different finishes.

NOTE: The pictures above are good examples of the techniques and materials that will be taught, but are not pictures of the actual projects.

Materials Provided:

Judy will bring a selection of her homegrown barks and fibers for each weaver, including willow bark, cedar bark, rush, and other garden fibers. All materials needed for the projects will be supplied, giving you a solid foundation for creative exploration.

Supplies/Tools to Bring:

Please bring a small water vessel (such as a quart yogurt container or similar size) for soaking fibers during class.

These small gems are not only captivating to weave, but they also make for enchanting gifts. Don't miss this chance to learn from a seasoned expert and craft something beautiful!

Food & Snacks:

Lunch, snacks, and drinks will be provided by Basket Makers Supply, but you are welcome to bring your own as well.

About the Teacher:

With over 30 years of basketmaking as a lifelong learning adventure—and her fiber arts garden as her muse—Judy Zugish relishes the deep, complex joy of being devoted to a passion. Whether she is working as an original artist, educator, juror, curator, writer, or speaker, Judy strives to capture the joy of the creative process and pass it into the hands of her students. She works to infuse that spirit into every piece she creates, preserving the knowledge, inspiration, and storytelling power of art through basketry.
